The Benefits of SSDI
Many people never purse disability benefits because they simply do not understand or appreciate the benefits being enrolled provide. As you learn about the disability process you will find that there are many additional benefits to SSDI enrollment. A short list of the benefits include:
- income check: SSDI provides a regular monthly payment based on the Social Security taxes you have contributed while employed. Once payments begin, annually you will receive a cost of living adjustment.
- Healthcare Insurance: After 24 months of SSDI entitlement, you become eligible for Medicare, including Part A (hospital benefits). You can purchase Part B (medical benefits) by having a premium withheld from your monthly check. Also, Medicare Part D (prescription drug plan) is available to all who are enrolled in Medicare. Some lower income SSDI and most all SSI recipients will also qualify for Medicaid depending on the state in which you reside.
- Dependent benefits: If you receive SSDI benefits and you have a dependent under age 18, he or she also may be eligible for benefits.
- Long-term disability (LTD) benefits: Many private long-term disability insurance companies require beneficiaries to apply for SSDI benefits.
