Selecting the right representative

You have a number of options in finding someone to represent you with your disability applications. Finding the “BEST ADVOCATE” can be a more daunting task.

You have choices. While some people prefer to hire an attorney; non-attorney’s can also serve as representative. Here are a few questions you should ask during your selection process:

  • Does my representative specialize in Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?

  • Will this person represent me through the entire Disability process including all levels of appeal?

  • Does my representative provide assistance with other services and resources?

Trust is probably the most essential quality in your Advocate. You need to feel confident that your representative is looking out for your best interest (not simply trying to earn a fee). Factors that may influence the level of trust you have for a representative include:
  • Was the representative accessible by phone and returned my calls?

  • Did the representative seem knowledgeable regarding the Disability process and the SSDI/SSI system?

  • Was the representative available to answer my questions?
